Professor Harshal Deshmukh MBBS MPH MRCP CCT PhD FRACP is a consultant endocrinologist, clinical academic and Professor at Griffith University. He works as a Staff Specialist Endocrinologist at Gold Coast University Hospital and has extensive experience across diabetes, obesity, metabolic medicine and general endocrinology.
He has trained and worked across India, the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia. He completed a Master of Public Health in Epidemiology at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and a PhD in Genetic Epidemiology at the University of Dundee, before undertaking specialist training in Diabetes and Endocrinology in the United Kingdom. He subsequently held academic and consultant appointments at Hull York Medical School and the Allam Diabetes Centre before relocating to Australia.
Professor Deshmukh has a strong research programme spanning metabolic and reproductive endocrinology. A major current focus is polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS/PCOS), including its metabolic, reproductive and endocrine heterogeneity and the development of more personalised approaches to diagnosis and treatment.
He also has significant expertise in diabetes technology, including continuous glucose monitoring, insulin pump therapy, hybrid closed-loop systems and automated insulin delivery. His research has included multicentre real-world studies examining the effectiveness of advanced diabetes technologies in routine clinical practice.
His broader academic interests include obesity, cardiometabolic disease, diabetes epidemiology, precision medicine, health-service research and the use of real-world clinical data to improve patient outcomes.
Professor Deshmukh has published extensively in peer-reviewed medical journals and regularly presents his work at national and international scientific meetings. He is actively involved in medical education, research supervision and mentoring, and is committed to developing collaborative research programmes that translate advances in endocrinology and diabetes into better clinical care.
